Volunteer as a Massage Therapist
The Care Through Touch Institute is seeking new volunteers to grow our community of service orientated massage therapists. CTI provides free chair massage in the Tenderloin in San Francisco for people experiencing or at risk for homelessness. As massage therapists, many of us know the potential for our work to comfort and attend to suffering, and yet the financial demands of life in the Bay Area means that many who would stand to benefit most from therapeutic bodywork are excluded from access.
CTI offers free chair massage in shelters and other service sites as a radical act of love and social justice. For newly certified therapists, this is the best possible training, and for experienced practitioners, this is a wonderful way to reconnect with the intention to serve removed from economic concerns.
This work requires more than technical massage skills and may not be for everyone. Many of our clients have experienced trauma and we want to make sure to keep both them and our volunteers as safe as possible. The settings we work in and the needs of our clients often require a high level of responsiveness and flexibility. If you’re sensitive and tough, motivated by compassion and justice, resilient and inner-resourced, this can be a beautiful and rewarding opportunity to grow and serve others.
If this speaks to you, please reach out for an interview and more information. We’re looking for volunteers who can commit to working a 2 hour shift every other week for 4-6 months, after which service can be continued as desired.
You must be a CAMTC certified massage therapist or current student in a certified massage program to volunteer with us. Those with experience in bodywork or out of state license will also be considered.
